Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 March 2026 released the 22nd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme in Guwahati, Assam, transferring approximately Rs 20,500 crore to over 9.7 crore farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This central sector scheme provides Rs 6,000 annually to landholding farmers, distributed in three equal installments.

During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated, dedicated, and laid the foundation for development projects worth Rs 47,600 crore across Assam, including land pattas for tea garden workers, train services, pipeline capacity enhancement, cruise terminals, and the PM Ekta Mall to promote regional commerce and tourism.

PM-KISAN Scheme: Direct Financial Support to Farmers

Launched in February 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme supplements the income of small and marginal farmers by transferring Rs 6,000 per year directly into their Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts. The financial assistance is disbursed in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 each.

Eligibility:

Landholding farmer families with cultivable land in their names.

Required information: Name, date of birth, bank account details (number, IFSC/MICR), mobile number, Aadhaar number, and other passbook-related information for mandate registration.

The 22nd installment marks a continued effort to provide timely financial support to farmers nationwide, ensuring liquidity for agricultural needs and stability in rural incomes.

Assam Visit: Driving Development and Connectivity

During his two-day visit to Assam, PM Modi inaugurated and laid foundations for multiple projects, demonstrating a focus on infrastructure, commerce, and social welfare:

Land Rights: Distributed land pattas to tea garden workers, promoting housing security, institutional credit access, and long-term social mobility.

Transport Infrastructure: Flagged off three new train services to enhance connectivity in Assam and the North-East.

Energy Projects: Inaugurated the Capacity Enhancement Project of the Numaligarh-Siliguri Product Pipeline (NSPL) by Oil India Limited.

Maritime Development: Laid foundation stones for cruise terminals at Bishwanath Ghat (Biswanath) and Neamati (Jorhat) districts.

Commerce & Tourism: Opened the PM Ekta Mall in Guwahati to showcase One District One Product (ODOP) items, GI-tagged products, handicrafts, and handloom goods, strengthening regional trade and tourism.

These initiatives, cumulatively worth over Rs 47,600 crore, reflect a holistic approach to regional development, combining economic, social, and infrastructural objectives.

Implications for Farmers and Regional Economy

The timely disbursal of PM-KISAN funds improves financial liquidity for farmers, enabling them to manage agricultural inputs, household needs, and access formal credit. Meanwhile, the development projects in Assam are expected to stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities, and enhance connectivity and trade across the North-East region.

By combining direct farmer support with infrastructure investment, the government aims to foster inclusive growth, enhance rural livelihoods, and strengthen the broader regional economy.

Conclusion

The 22nd PM-KISAN installment, coupled with PM Modi’s multi-sectoral development agenda in Assam, underscores the government’s commitment to farmer welfare and regional advancement. Through financial inclusion, infrastructure development, and promotion of commerce and tourism, these initiatives aim to transform Assam into a hub of economic activity while ensuring tangible benefits for the farming community.
